The days of receiving unrecognized calls are long gone. Truecaller has been very effective in showing us the caller IDs of those numbers that aren’t saved on our device. However, apart from knowing who is calling, people also like to record some of these calls for future purposes (either personal or official). Many people have opted for third-party call recording apps specifically for getting conversations from your traditional voice calls saved on your devices.
Some people even had to get external tape recorders that may not give them the best quality recording. All these are unnecessary if you already use the Truecaller app. In 2018, Truecaller released the call recording feature on the Android version of its app, and it works well. Let’s show you how to use it.
Truecaller discontinued call recording feature
As of May 2022, Truecaller discontinued providing the call recording feature on devices that runs on Android 8 and above. This is to adhere with the Google terms and conditions implemented recently. The devices that run on older versions of the Android may still be able to use the feature because it doesn’t need accessibility permissions. Also keep in mind that there have been a lot of changes regarding the legal side of call recording. Before recording someone conversations, make sure that you have permission to do so.
Steps to Record Calls on Truecaller
We enjoy using Truecaller to record calls because the steps are simple and straightforward. They include:
- Download the Truecaller app from the Play Store and install it on your device.
- Sign in and configure your Truecaller following the steps provided.
- Find the three horizontal bars on the top left corner of the screen and tap it.
- Tap the Call recording option.
- When a new window opens, select the Start free trial option.
- Grant permissions for Truecaller to record calls on your phone.
When you see the message call recording enabled, you can start recording calls on your Truecaller. In six simple steps, you can get your call recording feature working on your phone without downloading any other Android call recorder apps. However, Truecaller’s call recording feature is only available for free for 14 days. After the trial period, you have to subscribe to the monthly or yearly subscription plans to keep using it.
When recording using Truecaller, you can either decide to manually enable the call recording for each call or set call recording automatically for all calls when you go to your Settings. To enable the manual mode, you’ll have to tap the record button when you make or receive a call. This prevents storing unnecessary call recordings on your phone. Truecaller recordings cannot be saved on external memory such as an SD card, so they stay on your phone. To access your recordings, check your phone storage. They are located under the Call Recordings option in the TrueCaller app.
Other Alternatives to Recording Calls on Truecaller
If you do not want to use Truecaller as your call recording app, these are some alternatives you can use.
1. Google Voice
Google Voice helps you record calls on both your Android and Apple devices. However, the steps to install them are different for both devices. Android phones come with Google Voice already installed in them, while you’ll have to download and install the app on your iPhone. Once you’ve signed up for a Google account and configured the app on your phone, it is easy to start recording your calls. To enable the call recording feature, all you need to do is:
- Head to the Google Voice homepage on your browser.
- Click the three dots on the top-left corner to view more menu.
- Tap Calls.
- Click on the slider on the right to enable incoming calls.
You can also decide to use the app to activate your call. Go to Settings, then click on Advanced settings and activate the incoming call option. Once you’ve followed these steps, you can simply enable recording incoming calls on your phone by pressing the number 4 when the call is ongoing. The caller on the other end will be notified that you are recording the call.
2. External Recorder
As mentioned earlier, some people use external recorders to get their phone calls recorded. People also use these call recorders when they don’t want the other party to know they’re recording the calls (check if the law allows this before you try it). To record with an external recorder, buy a recorder online for $35 to $110, then plug it into your phone’s 3.5-millimeter jack (earphone jack). Turn it on when the call is on and it will record everything.
3. Other third-party apps
You can also record your calls with other third-party apps for call recording. Like Truecaller, many of them are easy to use. Some of them are also free. So, if you don’t currently use Truecaller and you don’t want to upgrade your Truecaller subscription, then you can consider getting another third party app. While Truecaller only lets you record incoming calls, the best third-party apps let you record both your incoming and outgoing calls and provide you with top quality recordings.
Some of the best apps we’ve seen for Android phones include Call Recorder ACR, Automatic Call Recorder by RSA, Cube Call Recorder ACR, and Call Recorder by Top Weather Studios. If you’re using an iPhone, you can use apps like Rev Call Recorder, TapeACall Pro, Call Recorder – IntCall, and Call Recorder App for iPhone by Profuse to record your calls. These apps allow you to save your recordings as MP3 files and some even give you other file format options. Many of them also allow you to export it to the cloud and share it via social media and email.
4. Other devices
If you have two mobile devices, you can use one to make calls and the other to record the calls. This is not the best way to record your calls because the recordings are usually of poor quality. To use this method, put your phone on speaker when your call is ongoing. Then, pick up the other phone and turn on the voice recorder. Ensure that you’re making your calls in a quiet environment so that your recordings will come out clear. You cannot make the same phone call twice.
Is it safe to record your calls?
The safety of recording using Truecaller or any other service depends on your location. The laws regarding call recording vary from country to country. So, before you start recording, check your local and national laws regarding call recording and ensure that it is allowed where you reside. Also, Truecaller will not store information on your recording, since it is saved directly to your device and not on a third-party platform.
